Classic Black Coatigan: The Hybrid Piece to Take You Through Seasons

At this point, you’re probably thinking, what is a coatigan? Basically it’s a hybrid transitional piece between a cardigan and a coat – light enough with the drape of a cardigan, but also with the length and extra warmth of a coat.

I’ve always had a love-hate relationship with coatigans. They can be tricky at times: either the cutting at makes me look like I’m drowning in a robe, or the length doesn’t hit my Asian frame right. But they do become a fantastic season staple once you find the right piece for you! They’re especially a godsend for Hong Kong weather as it’s become so warm in recent years it hardly justifies investing in a quality coat anymore.

Because coatigans often fall on the casual end of the outerwear spectrum, I love it when they come with a lapel collar that gives it a more tailored feel. This one is a classic black, which goes with so many outfits, and the white trim frames the silhouette so that it doesn’t just blend into oblivion.

Dress it down with a cable knit sweater and sneakers like I did for this outfit, or throw on a classic button-down and heels for a night out. A white tee and denim cut-offs would even work for warmer months – a classic black coatigan will take you right through the transition into spring!
