Rattan and Leather: Welcoming Spring with MIRTA

Italy holds a special place in my heart. There’s simply no other way to put it.

While I don’t remember much of the glamour of Rome, I always thought I left behind pieces of my heart along the towns of Tuscany and the Amalfi Coast. Those were the days when Google Maps wasn’t really a thing and we would gladly lose our way in the alleys all afternoon, peering into vintage book shops and flitting from one store to the next. Hunting for little trinkets and small leather goods from local tanneries was a delightful game, all in hopes of finding a keepsake or two to take home with us.

If you’re like me, you revel in stumbling upon hidden secrets, in the little “oomph!” from discovering something unheard of where you’re from. That was exactly the budding feeling I had when browsing through MIRTA’s catalogue.

I first discovered MIRTA when looking up Italian tanneries — MIRTA connects consumers with luxury Italian artisans for authentic pieces handmade in Italy. The best part? When they say “made in Italy”, you can be assured it’s 100% made in Italy. No sneaky components produced elsewhere or products being shipped off for assembly. MIRTA’s vetted artisans add a delightfully human, or should I say soulful, touch to their pieces. We’re talking about workshops with a heritage passed down through generations and pieces lovingly crafted to age beautifully over the years.

Handcrafted Bags

In this age of instant gratification, it’s refreshing to see brands adopting an on-demand business model. Most items on MIRTA are labelled “to be crafted” as production only begins after orders are placed. IMO, a short wait always makes the feeling sweeter when your pieces finally arrive.

Over-production and wastage are issues often associated with the fashion industry. No excess goods means no burning of unwanted inventory. By making the switch to support MIRTA’s artisans, you can take a step towards a more conscious and sustainable approach to consumption, not to mention sustaining traditional artisans and keeping their craftsmanship alive. Keen on reducing your carbon footprint even further? Why not opt for eco-packaging when you check out your order.

Shoes

As we step into spring, I find myself reaching for warmer tones and natural textures. Capaf’s Fortuna has found itself firmly lodged in my spring wardrobe – I’m thinking of crisp white broderie, light ginghams and seersuckers. Needless to say, I’ve just added an item to my checklist after borders reopen: to visit Italy again, this time with the Fortuna bag in tow.

I’m not joking when I say that MIRTA has an extensive list of artisans lined up. To make things a tad easier, I’ve already handpicked my favourite pieces to get you started. Don’t forget to join CASA MIRTA to get rewarded while you support your favourite artisans!
